What can we learn from electronic music?

Technology has been lowering barriers to creation for a long time, and electronic music is a great example from the relatively recent past.

Recorded music was a threat to live music. Drum machines and synthesizers were a threat to live performers. Cheaper recording gear was a threat to recording studios.

But electronic music didn't kill music, because the tool – the instrument, the software, the hardware – always matters far less than the message. The tools of electronic music enabled waves of new creators to contribute their messages to the medium, and take it to new heights.

The computer is underutilized as a creative tool by the general population. Today, only a small fraction of computer users (programmers) have experienced the true creative nature of the computer. With AI, that's quickly changing – but the computer will also need to change.
